Week 8 - Refining (Pt. 1)

Last weeks pitch deck

Main Notes from Mentors:

  • The flower shot still needs more work to feel more lively and realistic in texture, FX, and lighting â€‹

  • Make specific changes to backgrounds in certain shots

  • Make compositing changes (depth of field, color correction, contrast, etc.)

Team To-Do List:

  • Work on flower texture and FX, adjust to look more realistic in both aspects

  • Work more on compositing for all shots

  • Adjust transitions between all shots

  • Work on background in flower shot and water shot

Personal To-Do List:

  • Shot 1 - Work on transition out of the shot, and smooth the switch between animation and simulation of ring

  • Shot 4 - Adjust camera transitions into and out of shot, and adjust end of ring animation to spin slightly less

Health Issues:

Unfortunately, this week I was not feeling well, and had to step back from work for a few days. My team was very helpful and supportive, and luckily my shots didn't have too much work needed this week, but I'm still slightly behind after this week. I'm feeling better now though, so I'll be able to work to catch up for our final submission! â€‹

Shot 1 - Animation work:

In shot one, the ring is animated to roll across the pedestal, and then switches to a simulation as it falls off the edge. In last weeks version, there was a bit of a bump in the switch between the two, which I worked this week to smooth out.

New animation from this week

I definitely want to continue refining this for next week-- I think the transition between the simulation/animation is much improved, but the turn of the camera over the edge feels a bit quick and less smooth overall than previous weeks have been.

We also altered our rendering schedule for this week. So far, we've set our rendering deadline as early Sunday morning, so that Wren could work on compositing for Sunday and Monday, but this week, we moved the rendering deadline up to Friday night, since more work needs to be done in compositing than in FX and lighting. I think we probably should have done this last week as well, but we were still making some pretty 3D changes, and ended up giving more time to work on that instead of comp.

Shot 4 - Camera Adjustments and Look Dev Tests:

I did not get to work on shot 4 very much this week due to being sick and definitely be giving it more attention next week to try and further refine it for our final deadline. The one thing that I did not get to touch at all on shot 4 this week was the animation of the ring. I want to spend some time smoothing out the ending and slightly decreasing the amount of spinning that the ring does, and will definitely be focusing on that next week before our final deadline.

We had previously received notes about ramping up the colors in this shot, and although we had adjusted the shot for these notes in comp, I wanted to try making some changes in the render. I did some quick tests of slightly different textures for the cloth and ring, to try and increase the saturation and brightness of the colors. However, after talking with Wren, our compositor, we decided to stick with the original textures, since we felt good about the previous color correction he had done and didn't want to undo that work. â€‹

Before and After-in progress comp of shot 4 from Wren

I also worked on adjusting the camera at the beginning and end of shot 4, to fit more smoothly into shots 3 and 5. We will still refine the transitions next week, but they're getting close!
