Shot 1

This week we wanted to work a lot on shot 1 - making the animation more graceful and realistic, making the camera movement smoother, adjusting the lighting, and working on the camera transition. Previously, Wren and Noelle, our compositor and look dev/lighting artist, had done a lot of the work to get the shot set up, but this week, compositing work was ramping up a lot, so I took over working on the shot.

I adjusted the animation and sim, tested a few options for camera transitions out of the shot, and worked with Noelle to start setting up a new lighting scenario for the scene.

Shot 1 updates from this week!

Camera Updates - Cloth

Some feedback we got last week was to work on the transition between shots 3 and 4, and try using a match cut to make the transition seamless. I worked with Max, who's working on shot 3, to match the end of his shot to the beginning of mine. The transition still feels a little awkward, so I want to continue workshopping it, but the rings are now lined up to be in the same position at the transition point! â€‹

Render Issues

We worked a lot on our compositing pipeline this week, with Wren getting all of the AOV rebuilds set up and working on color space tests. Unfortunately, we had a lot of issues with color space when it came time to actually render, and the shots ended up looking very desaturated and flat. Next week we'll plan to figure out all of the color space issues and make sure our rendering pipeline is completely figured out. â€‹

Bonus Issues: drive corruption!

The hard drive that I've been using as my main storage for this project got corrupted at the end of this week, unfortunately. There have been a few viruses going around the VFX and animation building, so I expect that my drive got infected with one of these. I was unable to retrieve my files, but I had a lot of backups or old versions of projects in various locations, so not too much work was lost. I lost a few days of work on shot 4, and some lighting work from shot 1, but that was it for this class! An inconvenient end to the week, but not the end of the world.
